U.S. imposes 25% tariffs on EU in wake of Airbus subsidies

At midnight last night, the U.S. imposed tariffs on Scotch whisky, Spanish olive oil, cheeses, wines, and other EU products. The World Trade Organization (WTO) had previously authorized the U.S. to impose tariffs on $7.5 billion of goods from the European Union (EU) following EU subsidies to aeronautics manufacturer Airbus.

U.S. – China Tariff Update:Phase One Trade Deal

Last Friday President Trump announced that Phase 1 of a larger trade deal with China had been reached. This deal eliminated the 5% additional tariffs on $250 billion of Chinese products (already at 25% tariff) that were scheduled for an October 15 increase. In exchange, China has agreed to increase purchases of U.S. agricultural products.

Trump National Doral to host G7 Summit 2020

Just down the street from WTDC in Miami-Dade County, the 2020 Group of 7 meeting will be held at the Trump National Doral. In an announcement made on Thursday by the White House, the president’s acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney said the Doral resort was an ideal location for this summit of world leaders from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States..

PortMiami MOU with Virgin Trains moving along

Miami-Dade County Commissioners presented a MOU with Virgin Trains that would provide passenger train access to PortMiami and include subsidies for a train station at the seaport. At the October 17 Commissioner’s meeting, PortMiami Director Juan Kuryla said that the port would make money off the deal and that it was a sound deal for the port. The item goes to vote on November 19, after which the County would negotiate terms with Virgin

Exclusions issued on hundreds of products affected by China tariffs

The United States and China are scheduled to resume trade talks this month and there have been a few key developments in recent weeks: USTR exempted hundreds of products from tariff increases bringing some relief to U.S. companies, and in mutual showings of good faith the U.S. pushed back Oct. 1 tariffs on Chinese products to Oct. 15 after China rolled back tariffs on a some U.S. products, though the rollback did not include key commodities affecting the U.S. agricultural sector such as soybeans.

Law Enforcement Officer Mass

WTDC Chairman Ralph L. Gazitua, a Chaplain for Miami-Dade Police Department and Catholic Deacon, participated in the 17th Annual South Florida Police Benevolent Association (PBA) St. Michael the Archangel Mass for Law Enforcement Officers on September 27, 2019.

The Mass was officiated by Archbishop Thomas Wenski (pictured above, right, with Deacon Ralph) and was attended by hundreds of officers and their families, featured a color guard from each of Miami’s municipalities, and was well represented by Miami’s political leaders including Miami-Dade Commissioner Jose “Pepe” Diaz (pictured below, right, with Deacon Ralph his wife Mrs. Cookie Gazitua.)

NRF: Tariffs may make your football experience more expensive this fall

The National Retail Federation (NRF) stands firmly against the tariffs that have been implemented on consumer goods from China. In their recent blog post which has been picked up by a number of media outlets (*Editor’s note: Including this newsletter with a nod to its levity) the NRF details football related consumer products that are scheduled for tariff increases such as footballs produced in China (15% tariff), fan apparel (15% to 30%), and other football gameday essentials such as TVs, grilling equipment, tables, chairs, and coolers.
