Florida: The State of Foreign Trade Zones
By Gary M. Goldfarb, WTDC Executive Vice President 7/16/13
The State of Florida has a wealth of assets and every potential to grow into a state dominated by Foreign Trade activities. There are several foreign trade zones in the State of Florida that play an important role in the growth of foreign trade, but none have developed the necessary traction to attract important manufacturing, assembly or distribution companies to promote job growth.
Miami-Dade County recently obtained a Foreign Trade Zone grant that covers most of the county in a new designation called ASF (Alternate Site Framework) and allows companies in the county to obtain foreign trade zone status at their existing facilities without having to relocate into a compound.
Since the start of 2013, there have been 11 applications for status in Miami-Dade County, with over 1.4 million square feet of warehousing space being activated and almost 700 jobs retained and an additional 100 jobs to be added… all this in a period of 6 months. The projections for the remainder of the year call for the total square footage to add up to 2.8 million and approximately 800 new jobs created. This does not include the effects of the existing zones in the county which have permitted an additional 300,000 sq. ft. and an estimated 300 jobs.
Florida Governor Rick Scott has been very active promoting Foreign Trade with Latin America and Europe, recently traveling to Chile and France on Trade building missions. Additionally, economic development organizations at the state and local level understand the need for trade based jobs. Florida’s four principal ports (PortMiami, PortEverglades, Jaxport and Port of Tampa) can be engines for growth with their diverse populations with multi-language skills.
Safety 1st... and 2nd... and 3rd...
A key element to achieving any goal is implementation. With measurable objectives, an abstract concept like ‘Safety’ can become reality. WTDC is taking strides to make itself a safer place for its employees by implementing 5S initiatives. Safety is a byproduct of a trained and educated workforce completing their duties in an organized environment free of obstacles. Started by Japanese automobile manufacturers in the 1980s, the 5S process standardizes organization.
There are five primary 5S phases:
1. Sorting (Seiri)
2. Straightening (Seiton) (Set in order, Stabilizing)
3. Systematic cleaning (Seiso) (Sweeping or Shining)
4. Standardizing (Seiketsu) (Standard Operating Procedures)
5. Sustaining (Shitsuke) (Sustaining the Practice)
Whether a company decides to embrace 5S, an ISO Standard, or Lean Six Sigma practices, their ultimate success depends on the Implementation and the employees’ continued investment in its practices.
