President’s Corner: Monitoring labor disputes and giving back this season

I hope everyone is having a great November thus far. We are monitoring the negotiations between USMX and ILA as it was reported this week that the parties are again at odds on a new labor contract.

WTDC is embracing the spirit of the season with our ongoing commitment to community engagement. Our 6th Annual Thanksgiving Drive for Lotus House Women’s Shelter is in full swing accepting donations through next week.

Wishing you all a Happy Thanksgiving!

USMX x ILA Negotiation Update

On November 13th, negotiations with the International Longshoreman’s Association (ILA) and United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) reached a standstill over proposed automation technologies. While parties agreed on a 62% wage increase over 6 years, the ILA has re-voiced concerns of USMX integrating semi-automated equipment, declaring it a threat to union jobs. USMX argues for modernization to enhance safety, port capacity, and efficiency.

PortMiami Breaks Cruise Passenger Records

PortMiami reached a new milestone with over 8.2 million passengers in Fiscal Year 2024, marking a 12.79% increase from 2023. Panama Canal Expansion

The Panama Canal Authority plans to double container capacity as part of an $8 billion investment strategy, responding to recent drought challenges. This initiative entails enhancing water conservation and expanding cargo transfer capabilities. By 2045, the canal’s expansion on the west bank is expected to increase capacity by 5 million TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit), raising total capacity to 13.3 million TEU annually. Additionally, a new long-term reservation system is to be implemented, allocating 40% of the largest locks’ capacity to container and LNG (liquified natural gas) vessels.
