USEFUL TIPS TO PROTECT YOUR BUSINESS
The Florida Division of Emergency Management states that over 40% of businesses that close due to hurricanes never reopen. This official government site offers useful tips on how to protect your business, as well as resources for hurricane-related assistance:
WTDC Hurricane Preparation Guide 2024
- 1. HURRICANE ALERT: (72 hours)
- Issued by Miami-Dade County if readiness actions are required.
- Hurricane Alert Policy and Recommendations:
- WTDC will email tenants and customers its planned course of action
- Check WTDC’s Twitter for updates (@WTDC)
- WTDC will begin text messages to all subscribers of its Emergency Notifications (tenants and employees).
- Identify a plan and prepare your office with basic supplies for hurricane preparedness. View Hurricane Guide from Miami-Dade County
- 2. HURRICANE WATCH: (24 to 36 hours)
- Covers a specific area and time period. Indicates Hurricane conditions are possible usually between 24 to 36 hours.
- Hurricane Watch Policy and Recommendations:
- Tropical Storm conditions (wind speeds 39-73 mph or significant rainfall) may already affect the area.
- WTDC reserves the right to close to ensure the safety of its employees.
- Monitor advisory announcements (from Miami-Dade County or weather services)
- Finalize preparations for home and office in case HURRICANE WARNING is imminent.
- WTDC lobby doors will lock at this time and be open to keycard holders only.
- 3. HURRICANE WARNING: (24 hours – WTDC closed)
- Issued 24 hours before hurricane conditions (winds greater than 74 MPH) are expected in the area. If the hurricane path changes quickly, the warning may be issued 10 to 18 hours, before the storm makes landfall. A warning will also identify where dangerously high water and waves are forecast, even though winds may be less than hurricane force.
- Hurricane Warning Policy and Recommendations:
- WTDC policy will be to discontinue operations and dismiss non-essential personnel. We recommend tenants do the same.
- All cars must vacate WTDC parking lot.
- No tenant or staff allowed in the building during a hurricane.
- 4. Recovery Recommendations:
- WTDC’s goal is to resume operations 24 hours after an announcement is made that a hurricane or tropical storm has fully passed the area. Check WTDC’s Twitter for updates (@WTDC)
