U.S. reciprocal tariffs announced
On July 31, the Trump administration announced reciprocal tariffs set to begin on August 7th, labeling trade imbalances a threat to national security. Countries with whom the U.S. has a trade surplus will stay at a 10% tariff, unchanged since its April announcement, while countries that have an imbalance will be subject to the new tariffs.
China and Mexico are notable exceptions to the newly announced reciprocal tariffs. They are currently negotiating trade deals. Recent trade deals between the U.S. and Japan, Indonesia, and South Korea included investment pledges in the U.S.
On the more surprising end, months of negotiations between India and the U.S. failed to yield a trade deal, reportedly due to geopolitical disagreements. And Canada, the U.S. largest trading partner, has been assessed a 35% tariff, thought that blow will be lessened as USMCA-applicable products will not be subject to the duties.

Miami’s Future-Ready Perishables Facility breaks ground
On July 21, officials broke ground on a new high-tech phytosanitary perishables facility in Miami-Dade County. Located just down Milam Dairy Road from WTDC at 7449 NW 12 Street, this 340,000-square-foot perishables center will be the first of its kind in Florida and the largest in the U.S. It will open in 2027 with a $141 million price tag. The center will use USDA-approved non-chemical treatments on imported fruits, vegetables, flowers, seafood, and more, keeping them fresh and safe.

The partnership between PortMiami, Miami International Airport, the Mandich Group, Cold-Link Logistics, and Reveam is expected to create over 200 jobs, provide inspection services for 20,000 containers per year, cut spoilage, speed up inspections, and handle more than 1.5 million tons of goods each year.
