President’s Corner
WTDC’s Internship Program is now 16 years old! By offering internships, we have been able to introduce over 125 students to the fast paced world of logistics.
We have had the opportunity to meet well-rounded students through FIU Handshake as well as the South Florida Logistics Fair. We encourage you to reach out to your local college and university students!
This Spring, WTDC welcomes two new Interns from FIU: Guadalupe Mezquita and Michelle Heinze.

WTDC Spring Internship
Welcome to the team Guadalupe and Michelle!
Guadalupe Mezquita (left) is a Senior at FIU majoring in International Business. She is on pace to graduate Summer of 2024. Guadalupe will be assisting WTDC’s transportation department this semester.
Michelle Heinze (right) is a Junior at FIU majoring in Business Analytics. She is set to graduate Fall of 2025. Michelle will be working on a project to reach zero waste to landfill as part of WTDC’s Sustainability Initiative.
Port Everglades Panama Canal Authority Webinar
On Friday January 19th, the 39th edition of Port Everglades Trade Partner Webinar Series will highlight Panama Canal Authority. Deputy Administrator Ing. Ilya Espino de Marotta is presenting the webinar and will go over the current activity and conditions at the canal.

PortMiami welcomes world’s largest cruise ship
Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas entered PortMiami on Wednesday, January 10th. It is the largest cruise ship in the world as well as Royal Caribbean’s first vessel to run on liquefied natural gas (LNG). It will set sail for the first time January 27th.

Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd to form alliance for January 2025
On Wednesday, January 17th, A.P. Moeller Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd have formed an alliance that will change the current global landscape of shipping alliances.
The agreement will include a fleet of approximately 290 vessels (60% of ships being Maersk and 40% Hapag-Lloyd) with a capacity of 3.4 million containers altogether.
Due to the new alliance, Hapag-Lloyd will be leaving THE alliance with HMM, Ocean Network Express, and Yang Ming by January 2025. Maersk has stated before that the current 2M alliance with Mediterranean Shipping Co. is set to end January 2025 as well. THE alliance and 2M are two of the largest shipping alliances in operation.

Port Everglades to find new Director
On December 20th, Port Everglades Director Jonathan Daniels announced his departure from his position effective February 5th. He has accepted a new position of executive director of Maryland Port Administration which includes the Port of Baltimore.
Chip LaMarca, Lighthouse Point state Representative, has been a potential replacement for the position.

Winter storm; Flight cancellations continue
More than 1300 flights have been canceled and 1200 delayed due to winter weather storm.
On Monday, January 15th, more than 3300 flights were canceled being the most flight cancellations in a day since 2022.
